ANZ to offer Apple Pay as digital disruption accelerates

ANZ will become the first major bank in Australia to offer Apple Pay services in the latest significant development in the Australian payments sector.

With new payment technologies rapidly emerging, customers with ANZ will now be able to use Apple devices to pay with Visa and AMEX cards. Roughly 70 per cent of ANZ’s GoMoney customers already use an Apple device.

"Customers have been asking for [Apple Pay] in Australia for quite a while."

ANZ to offer Apple Pay as digital disruption accelerates

ANZ group executive Australia Fred Ohlsson says ApplePay will provide a safe and more convenient payment experience for customers.

“It makes it much more convenient to pay, both in-store and in-app” he told BlueNotes on video.

ANZ managing director, products & marketing Matt Boss said the move was a natural evolution for the bank’s payment offerings.

“If you Google any of the banks and put Apple pay in you can see there is clearly a demand from our customers,” he said. “And customers have been asking for it here in Australia for quite a while.”

Ohlsson said the bank had learned from its experience with its GoMoney product, including the customer demand for touch ID payments. Boss said the simplicity of Apple Pay was the key for consumers.

“One of the biggest things we’ve learned through GoMoney, through the internet banking refresh we’ve just had and other things, is if you actually just build a thing that’s simple, the uptake is really there,” he said. “I think this provides something like that.”

Ohlsson said the service was at least as safe as contactless payments, with no critical payment information kept on the phone, and “arguably even safer because you actually need your touch ID to pay”.

Boss and Ohlsson also touched on the future of fintech and what it will mean for customers. Watch the video above to find out more.
