Paying attention to equality

By now, most of you will have heard the news that 61.6 per cent of Australians who participated in the Marriage Law Postal Survey have supported a law change to allow same-sex couples to marry.

ANZ has been a consistent supporter of marriage equality as part of our commitment to encourage a culture of respect and inclusion within our workplace and in the broader community.

" This is an emotional moment where there is now the very real prospect the law will change and the rights enjoyed by others will soon be open to them."

I won’t hide the fact I am also personally very pleased the result has gone this way.

For many of you, including the very strong Pride Network we have at ANZ, this is an emotional moment where there is now the very real prospect the law will change and the rights enjoyed by others will soon be open to them.  I know you will rightly want to celebrate – and you should.

Let’s all remember though, for others it’s a difficult moment which isn’t consistent with their beliefs.

I only hope that, whatever your view on the Survey outcome – elated or disappointed – we all treat everyone with respect.  It’s an ANZ value and a basic tenet of a well-functioning democracy.

I’m a big fan of Tracy Chapman’s music and as I was thinking about what the survey outcome would mean to people, I thought of her saying: “You have to pay attention to the moment and make it the best it can be for you”.

Let’s pay attention to this moment.  The next step is for the Australian Parliament to consider how it brings marriage equality into law while still protecting religious and other views in society - and to make this moment the best it can be for Australia’s future.
