Speaking at the BlueNotes-sponsored Australian Payments Innovation forum 2014, RFi managing director Lance Blockley produced this slide, which provides a fascinating insight into where Australian cash is actually held.

"Domestic and overseas ‘hoarding’ for stored value accounts for $28 billion, or over 45 per cent [of all cash in circulation]."

Surprisingly, the vast majority is hoarded offshore. Almost a third of all cash in circulation is held in this manner.

“Domestic and overseas ‘hoarding’ for stored value accounts for $28 billion, or over 45 per cent,” Blockley said.

As for the famous five-cent piece? Over 50 per cent are currently in jam jars around the country, he says.
